3 Reasons to avoid wearing protectives styles for too long
Let’s be honest, there isn’t much that goes together quite like protectives styles and Black women in the summer. As the seasons change, Black women all over the world are making their hair appointments to enjoy the warmer weather. Styles like braids and sew ins are necessary from time to time to give our hair a break from the constant manipulation and heat usage. Not only do they prepare us for the sun and vacation, if done properly they can also be a great way to retain growth.
Because protective styles are so beautiful and convenient, it can be easy to keep them for longer than suggested.
3 Reasons Protective Styles shouldn’t be worn for more than 2 months at a time
Prevention of Traction Alopecia: is hair loss due to repetitive tension on the hair. This could be a result of braids, sew ins, or tight ponytails and buns. Although it is said that if caught in an early stage, TA can be reversed- we’d just like to prevent it all together!
Hair needs to be properly cleansed- Often times people will still shampoo their hair/scalp with their chosen protective style. But its really difficult (especially with sew ins) to thoroughly clean your hair without completely taking the style out.
Hair needs a break from the tension- As the protective styles gets older, the weight from the extensions cause extra pulling. This can result in breakage of the new growth and damage to your scalp.
Protective styles can be a really important and fun part of our hair journey. They’re intricate, beautiful parts of our history and one of the ways we celebrate our crowns. But most things should be done in moderation, and protective styles are no exception.
I hope these tips answer a few questions and help you to get the most out of your protective styles this summer!
